You may know Graphjam, you may not. That’s the site that likes to present us with graphs and pie charts based on more-or-less humorous ideas. This one’s not too bad:

(in case you have a mac, the gag here is that the whole of the pie chart seems to look like the actual wallpaper)

That said, someone seems to have taken this idea and run with it – and run very quickly too. I have no idea who’s behind these ‘flagjams’ (as I call them), but they seem to have a marvellously cynical POV regarding the world. For example, here’s the ‘jammed’ flag of China:

First up, cheers to Jay fer bringing this to the fore.
Next, ye may want to read a related article Chris wrote some time back… (Beware Movie Pirates)

Now; as you know, people who make, sell or buy products that are clearly not of kosher origin are unpatriotic heathens with no respect for property and must be pursued and punished with the full force of the law. Or, to put it another way, knock-off goods and illegal downloads cost untold millions to the economies of various countries.

There’s just one little detail though: that word, “untold”. Up until now, the US government has been able to provide suspiciously accurate figures on just how much such piracy is costing. However, a new report by the internal watchdog (Government Accountability Office or GAO) has finally skewered these skewed ‘reports’ once and for all. And it’s not finished yet, either.
Here’s just one example: The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) set up their own little research into how damaging illegal movie downloads were to the industry. Actual figures aside, the GAO have now revealed that the MPAA report overstated the piracy by three times the real quantity.

I’m not going to paraphrase the whole thing – especially since there’s such a good article on it over at ars technica.

Stephen Fry is a very brave man
Posted by Spike Matthews on Friday, February 12, 2010

You may have gathered from a couple of my earlier posts that I have Views. You may also have gleaned the idea that I’m not over-shy about bruiting them about.
As far as religion goes, I don’t see the need for it these days, although I am quite happy with the idea of personal faith. Believe what you will, just don’t try and force others to join you. There may be a God, there may be many – or none. Whatever; I just live to be the best person that I can.
That said, I have to applaud Stephen Fry for having the guts to stand up in front of a hall full of people – half of whom are strict believers of one form or another – and, in a quite logical manner, pointing out the major flaws of the way the Catholic Church operates.

My favourite bit? When he’s referring to his own sexuality and saying, “… for me to be called a pervert by these extraordinarily sexually dysfunctional people….”

I’m dedicating this one to Terry Pratchett
Posted by Spike Matthews on Friday, February 12, 2010

This could be a tricky one fer many folks, as it deals with a touchy subject: death. The matter of keeping terminally ill patients alive against their will has been in the press for quite a while now (at least, it has in Britain), a fact predominantly down to the Discworld author Terry Pratchett.
As you probably know, the great man has a form of Alzheimer’s and has been lobbying strongly for the right to die with dignity. As you would expect from the man who includes Death as a compassionate character in pretty much everything he writes.

With that in mind, here’s another Oscar nominee I’ve discovered: The Lady And The Reaper.

What if… company logos were the real thing?
Posted by Spike Matthews on Thursday, February 11, 2010

Today, may I present for your viewing pleasure, Logorama, a short film about life in a city on the west coast of the USA, as represented by a multitude of business logos and pop icons. I’ve watched it three times so far, and I’m still finding little references I missed before. One thing I will say is that the film-makers (a French bunch under the name of H5) really don’t seem to like poor old Fido Dido

Slick, sharp and ripe fer litigation, I’d suggest ye watch this before it disappears (Oscar nomination notwithstanding).

For the Fracophones amongst us, here’s the film’s own page: LOGORAMA-THEMOVIE (it’s also a better resolution for watching the film, IMHO)
