Video Embedding Hell

uburntube

The web is aflutter with video and therefore filled with copyright infringement. I won’t bore you with a childish rant about not being able to watch free movies & TV shows online. My beef is with the video hosts’ lack of information. I don’t know about you, but when I see the message above I get frustrated with Youtube, not anyone else.

You Tube Documentary
Posted by Chris on Sunday, December 7, 2008

That’s right, someone thinks you want to watch 2 hours of Youtube clips or something.  Here’s the trailer, on, yes you guessed, the tube:

I guess they are submitting it to festivals and such, according to the site.  I am sure I am not the only cynical bastard in the world that is going to say this, but how freaking hilarious would it be if they found a major film distributor for the documentary?  Sony or some company buys the rights and then they won’t allow the doc or clips to be posted on youtube.

I’m going to see if I can get a copyright on my brain waves to ensure that every thought is my own before some vague copyright law takes those away from me.

Psystar Easily Trumps Apple’s Last Announcement
Posted by Chris on Thursday, October 30, 2008

magic

The writing is all over the web, engadget, mac user, technorati and I read the story at iheartchaos.  Choose your poison and check it out.  Psystar has announced they will offer OS X-capable machines with built-in Blu-ray and NVIDIA’s GeForce 9800GT.  That’s right, if Apple isn’t going to man up and give their customers what they’ve been demanding, Psystar will.

Apple filed suit against Psystar for copyright infringement because Psystar started selling Hackintosh computers, or Open Computers with OS X installed.  Psystar is countersuing Apple for anti competitive business practices, monopolistic behavior, and copyright misuse.  Thus, while all this lawsuit stuff is pending, they decided to go ahead and trump Apple with this latest announcement.

Beware Movie Pirates
Posted by Chris on Wednesday, October 29, 2008

Corruption is ripe in our corporations, our government and our banking system.  Yet, all we ever do is roll our eyes or slap white collar criminals on their wrists.  However, if you try to video tape Enchanted with your camcorder, by God we’re going to throw the book at you.  Michael Logan was sentenced to 21 months in jail for pirating films.

So much of our lives, these days, are filled with keeping up appearances.  Logan’s prison sentence is a symbolic gesture to say, “We’re tough on pirates!  Don’t pirate movies!”  It reminds me of our economic bailout package which was all about the appearance that we are doing something.  (Seriously, every time a politician, or even an economist was asked to explain how the package would work, they couldn’t.)  Now, we put this dude in jail for trying to copy Enchanted?  For fuck sake, isn’t it punishment enough that he had to sit through the film to begin with?  Read the rest of this entry »

PMOG Link Monday vol. 15
Posted by Chris on Monday, October 6, 2008

Jumping right into the PMOG missions I took this week, here’s the goods–

Religulous vs. Expelled

The friendly atheist blog has an article from the Orlando Sentinel comparing Ben Stein’s Expelled to Bill Maher’s Religulous.  A while back I shared my opinion on the Ben Stein film produced to discredit the idea of evolution.   I have yet to see Expelled or Religulous, but I hope to see both.  The article comparing  the films was very interesting and I found it thanks to a mission by deixado leading me to the friendlyatheist.com

OVGuide

Thanks to PMOG user clicktok, I’ve got a new place to search for TV shows & movies online.  OVGuide is a site that allows users to search for video content from over 1600 sites.  I am looking forward to catching up with some bad TV there.

Totem Destroyer

totem, yo!I could have posted this volume of PMOG Link Monday much sooner, but I spent an hour playing Totem Destroyer.  If you lose track of what day it is because you are having so much fun, blame gbelste not me.  I am warning you that it is addictingly fun.

A Fair(y) Use Tale

Finally, I took a mission on copyright law to see what sort of resources were presented by the PMOG user.  It was mostly sites that I already seen, but another user, allyson posted this video link in the comments:

I thought they used a great concept  to discuss copyright.

Check this wonderful link out, my media flavored friends.  This MIT research project is trying to learn how youtube spots copyright violations and perhaps, more importantly illustrate the mistakes the system makes.  Parody, criticism and education can be viable fair use and not a violation.  Of course, you can’t watch any of the videos on the site, but it is nice to see someone fighting the man.
