Free Jimmy & Terkel
Posted by Chris on Friday, October 31, 2008

The other day a friend on PMOG suggested a Norwegian 3D film via this article.  The article was interesting and the film was decent.  Great script(English version by Simon Pegg), but the animation, in my opinion, was sub-par.  The look of the animation was so-so, but the movement was very, video game stiff.  Here’s the trailer for Free Jimmy

That movie reminded me of a trailer I saw for another Norwegian animation.  Oh, I guess it is from Denmark, like you know the difference.  The trailer below looks funny, but I have yet to find it so that I can watch Journey to Saturn.

Now, the plot thickens more because the trailer mentions Terkel i knibe as the successful film that precedes Journey to Saturn.   When I went looking for Free Jimmy, I found Terkel in Trouble(English translation) and watched it also.  Terkel was pretty damn funny.  I really liked it and definitely recommend it. The version I saw was the Danish version with English subtitles.  When I went trolling for clips on youtubez, I found this song in English.

It turns out that there is an English version of Terkel in Trouble, but some of the song titles seem pretty tame compared to what I saw.  I think they might have toned down the rude, graphic language that was so fun.  The moral lesson of Terkel is “that real friends should err…have 20 minutes in the oven at 250° Celcius.” At least that is what it said at the end of the film.

The Blame Game
Posted by Chris on Friday, October 31, 2008

If there is one thing that we, as a race, excel at it is blaming others.  Politicians, athletes, coaches, celebrities, judges, cops, managers, waitresses, customers and school children all know how to pass the buck to a scapegoat.  In honor of that, here’s a mediocre “funny song” I saw on the youtubez.

It could have been worse, I could have posted another awful music video from the late 70′s/early 80′s.

Psystar Easily Trumps Apple’s Last Announcement
Posted by Chris on Thursday, October 30, 2008

magic

The writing is all over the web, engadget, mac user, technorati and I read the story at iheartchaos.  Choose your poison and check it out.  Psystar has announced they will offer OS X-capable machines with built-in Blu-ray and NVIDIA’s GeForce 9800GT.  That’s right, if Apple isn’t going to man up and give their customers what they’ve been demanding, Psystar will.

Apple filed suit against Psystar for copyright infringement because Psystar started selling Hackintosh computers, or Open Computers with OS X installed.  Psystar is countersuing Apple for anti competitive business practices, monopolistic behavior, and copyright misuse.  Thus, while all this lawsuit stuff is pending, they decided to go ahead and trump Apple with this latest announcement.

Beware Movie Pirates
Posted by Chris on Wednesday, October 29, 2008

Corruption is ripe in our corporations, our government and our banking system.  Yet, all we ever do is roll our eyes or slap white collar criminals on their wrists.  However, if you try to video tape Enchanted with your camcorder, by God we’re going to throw the book at you.  Michael Logan was sentenced to 21 months in jail for pirating films.

So much of our lives, these days, are filled with keeping up appearances.  Logan’s prison sentence is a symbolic gesture to say, “We’re tough on pirates!  Don’t pirate movies!”  It reminds me of our economic bailout package which was all about the appearance that we are doing something.  (Seriously, every time a politician, or even an economist was asked to explain how the package would work, they couldn’t.)  Now, we put this dude in jail for trying to copy Enchanted?  For fuck sake, isn’t it punishment enough that he had to sit through the film to begin with?  Read the rest of this entry »

Popeye Village
Posted by Chris on Tuesday, October 28, 2008

File this under “Who knew?”  In 1980, Robert Altman’s film Popeye debuted to less than favorable reviews from critics.  Not only did they decide to make an animated classic a live action film, but they chose to make it a musical.  As a child, when I saw it I thought it was slightly boring.  Most likely, Popeye is one of the reasons I hate musicals.  Seeing the movie on television, I have to say that it is better than much of the crap Hollywood releases now, since Popeye is unique and not some formula driven sequel or duplicate of something that made bank.

I did not know the village built for the film is now a theme park.  Right from the website:

‘SWEETHAVEN VILLAGE’, the Film Set of the 1980 Musical Production “Popeye”, also known as ‘POPEYE VILLAGE’ was constructed in Anchor Bay during the last 7 months of 1979.

To construct this authentic wooden village, tree trunk logs were trailered overland from Holland, and wood shingles, used in the construction of the roof tops, were imported all the way from Canada. A 165 international construction crew consumed eight tons of nails and two thousand gallons of paint to finish off this massive Set.

No less than 20 wooden structures had to be built. Before construction could begin, an access road leading to the Set had to be constructed. Also, Anchor Bay needed a 200-250 foot Breakwater at its mouth, to protect the Set from high seas during the shooting months of the Film Production.

Next time you are in Malta, check it out.

Here’s a groovy music video made from the film, or you can watch one of the musical numbers, if you are a brave soul.

Blow me down

The next time someone wants to make a movie about a brothel or a bordello, maybe they could build the set in my back yard?
